Family Command center Wall

One way to simplify and organize your home is to create a family command center. This is a place where you can conveniently store everyday items. Home command center walls can not only be a way to keep your family organized, but it can also be a stylish statement wall in your home. A place for you to show off your style while being organized at the same time!

When designing our families command center, I wanted a place where I could hang our keys, school lunch boxes and book bags, as well as a place to put all of the important papers that come home from school. In addition, with juggling 5 schedules, I wanted a place to keep track of all of our family activities. The calendar keeps us all on the same page and allows each family member to see the months scheduled appointments and commitments.

However, I did not want the space to look cluttered or in other words a “hot mess!” So by creating a command center wall you get the opportunity to design a functional, but also stylish place.

Here is a 4 step guide to creating a stylish and functional family command center.

Creating a Home Command Center Wall

Step 1: Decide on the Purpose of the Space

The 1st step to creating a family command center is to decide what you want the space to hold. For example, are you looking for a place to store bags or coats? Do you need a calendar for appointments? How about a place to hold your keys or more importantly now all the masks we have! This is your opportunity to get organized. Decide what you really need to clean up and wish you had a “home” for. This is the best place to start to plan out the purpose of home command center.

Home Command Center Storage

The highlight of a home command center is the ability to create functional, practical and even beautiful storage. The home command center is one place in your home that is used to store many items that you use everyday. For my family, I designed the home command center wall to have the ability to store lunch boxes, book bags, keys and the kids school mail. It is so frustrating for me to come home to book bags thrown on the floor and shoes and coats everywhere. Not to mention, all the school paperwork that comes home! A perfect solution for all of this chaos is a home command center wall!

What Does a Home Command Center Need

  • Wall calendar: one that you can erase and re-use all year long.
  • Wall hooks: sturdy ones that can ideally hold heavy coats or books bags.
  • Key Ring Holder: find one that has more than one purpose.
  • Wall bins: a place to store mail, reusable masks, school work, etc… (also known as a wall file holder).
  • Dry Erase Board or a Chalk board: with the ability to stick magnets too.

Where Should I Put my Family Command Center

Ideally you want to have your home command center in a place that you pass through on your way into and out of the home. My home command center in right next to our mudroom. We literally need to pass through this space to enter the home. Having your family command center near the mudroom is a great place for it. Instead of just “dumping” everything you are holding when you come into the home, you will now have a place to neatly store the items.

Another great location for a home command center is near the kitchen, as the kitchen is often the “hub” of the home. Whether you choose a wall near the mudroom, entrance of the home or in the kitchen, just make sure that it can be seen everyday. Simply stated, you want the family calendar to be viewable so that everyone remembers what is on the day’s agenda.

Design pieces for home command center

Step 2: Begin Designing the Space

Now that you now what you want to store in your family command center and where you want to “house” your command center, you can begin to pick out the functional pieces. I started with the “stay awhile” sign (shown above) and began to choose decor and organizational pieces that matched the sign.

I find that the best place to begin when designing a place in your home, is to select 1 piece. Possibly a picture, sign or piece of furniture that you love and then search for coordinating pieces to match. In other words, you need your “inspiration” piece. Once you find that piece you can’t live without, then you have your starting point and you can begin to pull together your whole design look or theme.

Step 3: Choose your Layout

Now that you have chosen all of your pictures and organizational wall pieces, it’s time to choose your layout. To start, lay out each command center piece on the floor. This literal visual helps to move the pieces around to see a few looks before deciding on the final product. Tip: I find that laying all of the pieces together on a flat surface, helps you to see how it will look on your wall, without messing up your walls!

Step 4: Build the Command Center Wall

How do you Make a Command Center at Home

It is now time to hang up all of your items and pictures. The easiest way to make your command center at home is to style it based on function and need. In our home, the dry erase board calendar is in the center. In other words, we started with the highlight of the command center wall and then designed and built the rest around it. I highly recommend using a dry erase board style calendar, so that you can erase and add to it any time.

Another great tip is to make everything in arms reach. For example, if you are using hooks for your children to hang up their book bags, make sure they can reach the hooks. On the other hand, if you have storage pieces that you don’t want your children to get into, then hang those pieces higher and out of reach of little hands. Once you have all of the pieces hung up on the wall then you can begin to decorate and organize. Have fun with your design style!
